KWF Philosophy

Why is it that humans have a sense of awe and respect for a power that can deprive them of their lives in an instant, and also at the same perhaps see a sense of beauty in this power?

If we define Karatedo as a martial art of the single finishing blow, those who pursue this path must train themselves to learn technique so that each and every punch or kick, brimming with energy, bristles with the
danger of the finishing blow.

We must live to respect every moment of our life, which is always on the border between life and death.

This is where we will see the beauty in our spirit and karate technique. We must refine our technique, spirit and even our everyday' simple actions until beauty takes root in the demeanor in our life.

The path of Karate is an act of art, as we as humans, bring ourselves to the creation of beauty in our nature.

Let us walk the path of KARATE together.

MIKIO YAHARA 8th Dan KWF

KARATENOMICHI WORLD FEDERATION CHIEF INSTRUCTOR

‘Yahara’ – a name that both conjures fear and demands respect in the same breath. His reputation as a fierce fighter with an absolute determination for seeking the ‘One killing blow’ has made him both a feared opponent and respected teacher, so much so that his name has practically become synonymous with ‘Bujitsu Karate’ itself.

Mikio Yahara, born in 1947, in Ehime prefecture, started his Martial Art training in Judo, very similar to many of his peers. He however then went on to start practicing karate, and became a part of the JKA. After University, he then enrolled in the infamous JKA Instructor Class, and his reputation both as competitor and a teacher propelled his fame internationally. Nakayama Sensei, when writing about Yahara Sensei in his ‘Best Karate Series’, wrote ‘Mikio Yahara is a karateKa whose daredevil style of fighting in the midst of a heated contest leaves spectators breathless’.

Perhaps the main essence of Yahara is his single mindedness as a karate-ka. He has a dogged determination and tenacity and will not give in, nor will he back off. His need to ‘win’ (the actual battle not the shiai) was likely the reason why he is termed by some ‘the Japan champion who never won!). He would get disqualified or disallowed techniques as he would often fight with too much ‘Shinken Shobu’ and did not conform to the ‘sport rules’. He performs a living kata, but more so a kumite with the feeling of ‘Jissen’, almost a real battle.

In 2000, he established (KWF) Karatenomichi World Federation, with Akihito Isaka(a man who is actually his senior) as his Assistant Chief Instructor, along with an exciting list of senior names. The Ultimate philosophy, the ‘One killing blow’, which is central to both Yahara Sensei and KWF, is the central and definitive objective.

KWF Karate has a ‘rawness’ a sense of the old JKA from the 50’s and 60’s, and does not conform readily to what some see as modern karate. Yahara is a fascinating, charismatic, sometimes misunderstood character. This interview gives a small insight into Yahara the man, as well as Yahara the karate-ka.– Shaun Banfield & Robert Sidoli

Interview Questions By Robert Sidoli, Shaun Banfield and Yuko Kallender-Umezu. Interview Conducted by Yuko Kallender-Umezu, and translated by Paul Kallender-Umezu. Many thanks to the above named and Alex Chichvarin for providing photography.

(Yuko Kallender-Umezu) Sensei, I know you have been interviewed many times, but if possible, I would like to focus on some different aspects and find your views on them. At 18, you left Ehime for Tokyo. What was it that made you want to leave home to study karate when there must have been dojos in your area? I believe your brother was a karate-ka for example?

(Mikio Yahara) I first started learning Karate from my older brother. When I was at high school, I joined the Judo club. But I didn’t feel it was enough. So I found and joined a local machi dojo. This happened to be a JKA dojo. However, when I was in Junior High School, I was diagnosed with a heart disorder and I could hardly walk a hundred meters.

(YKU) So you had a heart problem?

(MY) Yes, that’s right. But anyway, in High School I joined the Judo club because I didn’t want to be weak, and I wanted to overcome my heart condition. I didn’t want to be defeated by it, so I joined the club. But, as I said it wasn’t enough, so I joined the local Karate club in the city, and that happened to be a Shotokan Karate dojo. At that time there was TV drama called Karate no Fuunji (Karate Guy). In the drama, the actor was actually a real-life Karate-ka. They did this because an actor couldn’t have done the action scenes. It turned out that most of the actors in the drama turned out to be JKA instructors.

When I heard this story from my local dojo, I was very impressed that Karate instructors could do such a thing. I thought this was great, so I decided I wanted to go to the JKA Honbu and be like that. On top of that, the JKA not only was the most famous in Japan, but they had dojos worldwide. So my big initial motivation was to join the JKA HQ to become an instructor and I wanted to be able to become involved in a life that would take me all round the world. I had this big vision.

(YKU) You trained at Kokushikan University, what did your training consist of and what was the main focus of the training?

(MY) I joined Kokushikan University club but no one was stronger than me and when I went to the club to practice, most of my sempai disappeared. Basically they were scared of practicing with Yahara. Basically, even in college days, most of my practice was therefore at the JKA Hombu. Sometimes I had to miss the HQ practice because classes were late and I had to go to the university club. Mostly, if you don’t attend the university club regularly, you get punished.

In my case, I went there to punish most of the people. In terms of developing my techniques, at that time I felt that Kokushin University club wasn’t doing me much good or harm. Almost all of my development was at the JKA Hombu. But please don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining about Kokushikan and this is no disrespect to the OB. It’s just that my development was forged at the JKA Hombu. Kokushikan University Club was well established with over a 100 members.

(YKU) So you can’t say that Kokushikan University was weak?

(MY) Well the strongest university in those days was Takushoku, That’s not to say that Kokushikan was weak, but I was stronger than any of the students there. I also went to practice at Komazawa University and Nodai and Nihon Taiku Daigaku but I never lost a fight (laughs). Those universities at that time had good reputations and were considered strong clubs. So to summarize, my home ground was the Hombu, but if I couldn’t make it on time, I went to university club practice. It takes about an hour to get to the Sohombu.

(YKU) After university you followed the footsteps of many JKA greats by entering the JKA Hombu. Who were your main teachers and what was the training like in comparison to Kokushikan?

(MY) When I joined, Enoeda sensei and Shirai sensei were already overseas to England and Italy but Kanazawa sensei had just got back. Nakayama sensei was teaching us and practicing with us. Nakayama sensei was the main instructor and Kanazawa sensei was assisting. Also Ochi sensei was still there.

There was no comparison between the HQ and university practice. At the university, there was never any fear involved, but on the way to the JKA, I was always worried, can I get through this without injury, will I actually get really hurt. So just before entering the dojo each time I had to steel myself for the coming practice. I had to brace myself because there were so many strong and famous instructors there.

(YKU) What made you decide to become Kenshusei?

(MY) The reason why I became a trainee was because I wanted to learn real Karate and real techniques and the JKA could give me those techniques and opportunities. I wanted to have those great JKA techniques and by assimilating those, I wanted to explore the world teaching Karate. I wanted to surprise people by showing great, beautiful Karate techniques.

I have to emphasize again that the difference in level between the technique at university and the Honbu- that difference is between amateur level and professional level. Nowadays students tend to win competitions and that shows the difference between those days and today. It shows that the level of professional and

amateur are becoming indistinguishable, they are blurring into each other. The reason why is that Karate is turning more into a sports, like a game.

Once you enter that path where Karate becomes a sport, you start to loose the idea of the need to be a professional, of what it is to be a professional. Since I know the difference between what is a professional and an amateur, I have to draw a clear line, make a clear distinction between real Karate at a professional level and sports-type Karate by amateurs. It is essential that people understand this difference. I want to preserve and maintain the professional level of techniques, and that is one of the purposes of the KWF.

(YKU) As a competitor you entered both Kata and Kumite. You seem to have applied the same determination to both. Which discipline did you prefer?

(MY) In my case, the purpose of practicing Kata is to reinforce and build up my strength in Kumite. In order to make your Kumite stronger, you must practice Kata, and Kata is the most traditional practice method. My Kata is not for competition purposes; my Kata is for actual fighting training. In my old Unsu video with the JKA, it is said that there is “soul” in Yahara’s Unsu. The reason why there is soul is because I put my soul into my Kata. I practice Kata to fight. In terms of my mental state, Kumite and Kata are the same.

(YKU) Bujitsu/Budo are very important concepts to you and your idea of karate. Please explain a little about them and how they relate to karate?

(MY) The concept of Bujutsu is to defend your life and body against attack with martial techniques, and each technique is a Bujutsu. The word Bu includes the meaning of protect yourself while simultaneously defeating your attacker. Do is supposed to be a very steep and tough path you have to climb to practice and perfect those techniques. This path is the practice, the long repetition, the forging of technique, of body, of mind.

To take this path, to enter into this path or way of life, this meant a professional or personal or spiritual meaning-for example to serve as a retainer to the King, or to protect your family, or for promotion of your social status, to establish yourself- because being strong is the key to your own success. Now, in order for you to become strong you have to fight. But for fighting, you have to risk your life. And in order to fight well you need to be in a state of Mu, or nothingness. You can’t be in a state of feeling fear, of wanting to do this or that. This is a state of Shugyo, or mental training, to fulfil your purpose. This is in additional to physical training to improve your technique.

There are two elements to being strong- being physically trained and to be mentally trained, and when you fight, you have to be strong in both. Basically to be really strong you have to have both. If you don’t have a strong mentality, you won’t be able to establish a good technique. For example, I could say, if you get exhausted so you can’t perform a technique, it could show your mental weakness, or on the other hand, if your technique becomes stronger, your confidence improves. So we can say that there are two elements that exist in a symbiotic relationship so that to become stronger you have to train both of them. Under that, there is a correspondence between mental strength and technique- strong technique comes from strong mental training.

Therefore training to establish a better technique should include giving you confidence and that confidence is part of a strong mentality, which should nurture you towards setting yourself new targets technically. So the focus on establishing good technique is essential to making people mentally tougher.

In Budo, there are certain purposes that you can achieve, everyone has their own purposes, and in order to achieve those purposes, training and improving and perfecting techniques while having a strong mental attitude is important. Without training and polishing both of these, you will not be able to achieve your targets. What you have to do is to eliminate your ego, you have to have the strength to eliminate your own ego, to achieve a state of Mu, if you are to do this, a state of no emotion- no fear, no anger, no emotion attached, and no attachment to life itself.

(YKU) One of your philosophies is that “Every single punch, every single kick, should brim with the energy, poised on the edge, to unleash a killing blow.” Is Ikken Hisatsu” essential to the true understanding of karate as bujitsu?

(MY) Without Ichigeki Hisatsu, I cannot exist. In Ichigeki Hitatsu, this is a life-or-death battle. This is what I do. To perform Shinken Shobu means or can literally be translated to be - if you make a mistake you die, the instant consequence of loosing is death. So what kind of training is required to perform Shiken Shobu? What kind of learning is important in this process? In the old days, Samurai had a sword and once that sword was unsheathed, it was the end - either for his enemy or him.

Once the katana is unsheathed, blood will follow, either that of your opponent or yours. Once the sword is unsheathed, it’s the end. Therefore, in a Karate context, my feeling is that if I move, I kill the opponent, or be killed. So, I want to achieve the same level of mental stamina and strength as with Shinken Shobu. Also, for my personal pride, I have to win if I move. And in order to win, I have to kill my enemy.

(YKU) Although this is a term many would relate to Chado’ Ichi-go ichi-e "one time, one meeting" is linked to both Zen Buddhism and sometimes Budo. In a life-or-death battle there is no second chance to "try again." Would this philosophy accord with your idea of karate?

(MY) Well, for example in competition these days, if you loose a fight in a competition you can get a consolation match - and I think this is total nonsense. Our way thinking, or in Budo Karate, we can’t imagine having such a rule. Once you are defeated you are finished. Of course behind this, there is a real difference between real fighting and sports matches. What I am actually trying to convey is that you must treat each opportunity as if it is your only one chance - that is why there is a value of meeting people and spending time for the moment together.

So in terms of Karate fighting, you must throw your technique as if it’s your one and only chance, and you must do it with full responsibility and without regret, put all your energy into that one technique. For Budoka, having pride is very important, and having that pride is one of the most important things. In a real fight, you actually have to throw away your pride. This is a little bit of a different issue- but from my own experience, if I win, I have the maai and my attack is totally in control…I know that even before I attack, my opponent is already defeated. That’s how I win.

Yahara’ – a name that both conjures fear and demands respect in the same breath.

His need to ‘win’ (the actual battle not the shiai) was likely the reason why he is termed

by some ‘the Japan champion who never won!).

Interview Conducted by Yuko Kallender-Umezu, and translated by Paul Kallender-Umezu.Many thanks to the above named and Alex Chichvarin for providing photography.

(YKU) In Nakayama Sensei’s Best Karate Series you demonstrate ‘Last Chance Technique’ as an example kani basami - the “crab claws”. Would you please describe your view of ‘last chance’ technique?

(MY) If you throw your first attack, this should be as if its your last attack, this is the appropriate, proper attack, the legitimate way. But IF you fail, then this is a very Bushido concept, niku o kirashite, hone o tatsu, this is a sutemi waza, a sacrifice technique: it means you let the opponent slash your flesh, but you break your opponent’s bone. In other words, you are prepared to sacrifice your own body, put yourself in great peril so that you can kill your opponent.

In this case, it’s OK if you get hit or knocked down, but it is then essential that you take your opponent down. So with my kani basami, I go down with the opponent, which is a great risk; if I fail to take my opponent down, my opponent will attack back and probably, in this case kani basami cannot be considered real sutemi waza.

I demonstrated this for my 8th dan- and this was the first time I tried it in 30 years. The way I do it is different from what might be considered the standard way. In my case I kick and at the same time I break the opponent’s center of gravity to bring him down, so there are two different things happening at once.

Nakayama sensei categorized kani basami as a sutemi waza, but I don’t regard my kani basami as a sutemi waza.

But anyway, the very important thing to remember about sutemi waza is not only the technique, but also the mental commitment - you have to know that you use this attack because you are prepared to die in attempting it.

Another thing I wan to stress is that Sutemi waza is not a kind of explanation word for a technique; it’s more like a mental state. No matter what kind of technique you use, if you do it, it means that you are prepared to risk damage to yourself in order to bring down your opponent, that mental attitude is sutemi waza. Sutemi waza is not the name of a category of techniques; it’s a mental attitude for a certain strategy of fighting.

(YKU) It has been said that you are one of the last ‘real’ karate-ka. Karate is obviously not a sport to you, what do you consider to be ‘real’ in karate?

(MY) I am just doing Karate. That’s all (laughs)

(YKU) Why did ShotoKan become so popular, do you think, when it was transferred to Japan?

(MY) When Funakoshi sensei first introduced Karate to Japan, as a guest of the Japanese government from Okinawa to present Karate and Okinawan culture, he made his presentation in front of elite representatives, including the elite from the Budo world, including Jigoro Kano. But Funakoshi sensei was admired and respected by those people, and elite university students were also impressed, including students from Todai and Waseda etc, who were later to become important figures in government, business and society. These are the people that welcomed Funakoshi sensei. So initially Shotokan karate was promulgated amongst the top-level universities. Once they graduated, Shotokan and its network spread through Japan. Intelligent people very well organized and formed great networks, so Shotokan had a very strong foundation to form a strong organization.

The JKA became well organized and this was very different from some other types of Karate, which sometimes consisted of individual sensei teaching in disparate dojos in different towns. In those days karate looked new and mysterious and fascinating and people got curious and interested in Karate. So this meant that a lot of people flooded in to learn. For example, punching and kicking and moving the body was fascinating compared to using a weapon. Traditional Japanese Budo tactics are to barge into your opponent and knock him down, then you give the final attack- atemi- but Karate didn’t do that, which was a very novel concept to other Budoka. At that time, in other martial arts, the atemi (knock -out blow) of Karate looked fascinating and new.

(YKU) Many karate-ka see Shotokan as comprising of three distinct and possibly separate disciplines, Kihon, Kata and Kumite. You believe that “By forging basic technique or Kihon within Kata, we then train to develop our Kihon technique and movement to the ultimate extreme. Then finally, when this is mastered it becomes an effective Kumite technique.” Without effective Kihon can a person still develop a real ability in Kumite?

(MY) Kihon is the form that allows the human body to create maximum power, and to maximize the potential power that can be unleashed by the body. Without correct Kihon, there is no Karate. So correct Kihon means developing a stable form, a platform, a stable movement with balance that can produce the maximum power. If you can’t apply these principles into Kumite movement, that Kumite is not Karate, it becomes sports fighting.

The KWF Kihon brings this concept into an extreme form. Some people say that maximizing the Kihon movement slows down the actual speed, for example rotating hips to the limit actually slows down the speed of the technique. The thing is, are you going to win by speed or are you going to hit your with real destructive power? For competition, speed might matter, but in KWF we are focusing on developing power, so in the KWF we are studying how to create and make a massive level of destructive power from technique.

Speed is important, but if there is no power, no bang behind the punch or the kick, in a real fight the opponent can hit you back. However, when people see my Karate they see I am very fast. And that’s an important part. With sports Karate, the main purpose of training is to learn to move fast. But in the KWF, or with my training, the purpose is to generate power, to learn how to compress and contract and expand the body and the speed comes from that, from training to generate maximum power. That’s the difference. Therefore the heaviness and destructive power is totally different even if the KWF technique is at the same speed or at a marginally slower speed.

If you train to create speed the movement becomes light, and the attack becomes very light. My technique and KWF training is not designed to create speed, it is designed to generate maximum power, and speed automatically comes from this anyway.

If you fight against a person who has a sword, if you don’t knock him down, or knock him out with one blow, you’ll get chopped to pieces. So please think about what sort of technique you want to develop if you find yourself in a real fight.

(YKU) You are known for your rendition of Unsu as a competitor. Do you have a favourite kata?

(MY) My favorite Kata are still Unsu and Empi. I really don’t know how to explain why I like them. In Empi, the biggest characteristic for me is koshi no kire, the extremely sharp and quick and dramatic hip movements, the bang-bang-bang, which really fits my need of self-expression. I don’t like the slow-type Kata such as Sochin, which Osaka sensei was excellent at - so we had a very sort of opposite character I suppose, but I really respected him. I guess I am not patient enough to move slowly.

(YKU) You perform some movements in kata differently to other organisations, for example in Bassai Dai there is no knee raise prior to executing Yama zuki. Is there a reason for this difference?

(MY) Well there is tendency for Kata these days to have become a little bit over decorative, but actually, the original Kata were all quite simple. And actually a lot of unnecessary and extraneous movements have been accreted to Kata over the years. What I am doing in cutting things like the knee raise is taking the Kata back to their older simplicity. However this process is not totally bringing them back to their original forms. I am actually slightly modernizing some elements to fit present needs.

(YKU) Certain kata have very exotic movements such as in Sochin the arm moving from under the armpit and then executing tate shuto? Are these movements throw backs to an earlier era as opposed to purely fighting application?

(MY) The reason for this question is a misunderstanding of the past. The reason for this movement is simply to move the sleeves back out of the way- remember people wore Kimono. To understand Kata movement fully, it’s actually important to know about the local lifestyle in Okinawa.

Understanding Karate fully requires initially knowing how people lived. In the old days there was no Jiyu Ippon Kumite practice. There was just ippon, just the opponent came in, and you attacked back. It was very simple. So please remember that the old karate was very plain and simple. The concept of free fighting was established by Nakayama sensei

(YKU) The KWF perform Jiyu Ippon Kumite where the attacker is expected to knock his or her opponent down with a single blow and that blow only to be stopped by a very strong block. Essentially the whole body must be fully utilised to produce dynamic and extremely strong techniques that are explosively powerful. Do you see Jiyu Ippon Kumite as the proving ground of such training?

(MY) Jiyu Ippon Kumite is the essence of JKA Kumite and the KWF carries this on this tradition. Jiyu ippon Kumite can be seen in Shiai, and in Jiyu Kumite. It can be seen in everything. But that Jiyu Ippon Kumite has to have perfect Kihon.

(YKU) In contrast to Jiyu Ippon Kumite at dojo level Jiyu Kumite sees opponents being expected to exercise control at every point, as injuring yourself or your opponent is considered symptomatic of poor technique. Could you explain your views please?

(MY) If you get injured, it means that your technique is not good enough. If you accidentally injure your opponent, again, that is lack of technique. However, if you attack your opponent to, and you deliberately mean to, injure your opponent that requires great control.

(YKU) During championships, the KWF prefer the victor of a match to win by oi-zuki or oi-geri rather than by any other technique; and then only a clean strong blow will result in a point being scored. Why does KWF prefer the oi-zuki or oi-geri?

(MY) In sports Karate, often a punch is just from the arm, and a kick is just from the leg, which means you are only using a superficial of the body. The inner dynamism of the fights is lost. However, to launch an effective attack, you have to throw it with all your body behind it and you should be able to do this over some sort of distance. I think oi-zuki and oi-geri are the strongest techniques because you are shifting your weight into the opponent. I would like to stick with those strongest techniques.

I would like to bring Karate back to Budo Karate as much as I can and this also means keeping a big distance between opponent so that you can secure your own territory and attack across a distance. If you are throwing a small or superficial technique, then you can do this safely across a short distance. But if you are going to generate a very powerful oi-zuki or oi-geri, you are going to need a certain distance to do this in order to generate the power.

In this context, you need to have a long maai and in this long maai you can generate very powerful oi-zuki or oi-geri, and the other side of this is that you can generate the ichi-geki you need to down your opponent while protecting yourself.

So if you perform a correct oi-geri or oi-zuki, you need the correct maai, a certain amount of distance, and you should use these techniques in shiai- this is the KWF style of shiai. In regular training, training is mainly focused on oi-zuki and oi-geri and rotation of the hips. And recently we have established a system and a curiculum so that people at sandan level are able to achieve that good oi-zuki or oi-geri in competition. This is quite an unique style and system compared to other organizations, I think.

An effective oi-zuki or oi-geri embody all the necessary body and hip movement.

(YKU) How has karate been effective in your life?

(MY) I am not sure whether this is good or bad, positive or negative, but Karate has definitely made me a very stubborn person. My way of thinking is dominated by Karate. Everything I do is based on Karate, its timing, its rhythm its maai…when dealing with people I sense how close I can get to them. In terms of human relationships, I always check my maai and his or her maai and my kokyu.

(TSW) Many thanks Sensei for your kind willingness to being interviewed for our project and may we wish you every success for the future!

SAKAE IBUSUKI SHIHAN Karatenomichi World Federation

SAKAE IBUSUKI

Karatenomichi World Federation

Presented to us here in this Special 2nd Year Anniversary Edition of TheShotokanWay, we have a rare interview with the unique Sakae Ibusuki Sensei, KWF. Sensei Ibusuki is of the generation fortunate to have trained with the Founder Gichin Funakoshi. He, a student of Master Funakoshi, and later Masatoshi Nakayama, in this exclusive interview discusses his time training with the Founder, his training and time with Master Nakayama and his friendship with Mikio Yahara and being a part of KWF. In the organizing of this interview, I spoke to Paul Kallender-Umezu, who was kind enough to organize and conduct the interview with his wife Yuko, and he told me of Sensei Ibusuki and the tree he has been visiting for 25 years, using as a makiwara. It got me thinking about the history and experiences of this inspirational man, and the all that he has to offer in wisdom and knowledge, and I am so very proud to present to you this interview, that you will undoubtedly take something away from.- Shaun Banfield 08

Many thanks to Sensei Ibusuki for his time and photographs, Paul and Yuko Kallender-Umezu for all of their hard work in bringing this interview to TSW.

Questions by The Shotokan Way.

(Yuko Kallender-Umezu) Sensei, can we say a huge thank you for being so kind enough to giving us this interview. We really appreciate it and look forward to learning more about you and your karate. Can you please tell us a little about how you first got started training in the Martial arts?

(Sakae Ibusuki) I started Karate when I was young, like a lot of people, to be stronger. I think that’s why most people start, isn’t it. I did Judo at middle school, but Judo wasn’t fighting; I was small and I guess it was that simple. When I was 16 or 17 I felt I wanted someting more.

(YKU) You were a graduate of Waseda University Karate Club am I correct?

(SI) Yes. So when I entered Waseda I joined the Karate club. I entered in 1948 and graduated in 1952.

(YKU) What was the training like at Waseda, could you share any memories that you have? Who was your teacher there? Who were your sempai?

(SI) At that time the club had been running for about ten years and Funakoshi Gichin Sensei was teaching. Training was Monday, Wednesday and Friday for three hours a session. That was the basic training. Of course, we had winter and summer gashuku for a week to ten days, and we’d go to local temples to train. At this point the JKA hadn’t been formed, so universities provided one of the main training bases for Funakoshi Sensei, who was also teaching at the Kodokan. There wasn’t at that point a clear organization. The universities were split into associations that were loosely allied and we would train together. There wasn’t a clear organization us such, but associations. The practice was in some ways much as it is today in that there was kihon, kumite and kata, but the kumite was very different. Firstly there were no fixed rules and there was no sun-do-me, so we used to hit and kick each other hard and it was very close to street fighting- we used to kick each other in the delicate areas and if you didn’t learn how to really block you would get hurt. And in those days many people got injured during kumite and there were quite serious injuries. In fact, it was very dangerous. However, I believe that Jissen- the ability to fight well in a street fight- is very important so when I teach Karate, I try to teach practical Karate that’s going to be useful in a real fight.

(YKU) How was your University training different would you say from the training you experienced elsewhere?

(SI) Like today, we had oizuki, gyakuzuki and all the basics you would recognize today. In terms of the number of repetitions you would do depended on the particular captain you had. When I joined we had one captain who insisted on several hundered of each technique. I thought that to be stupid. I have always thought quality is better than quantity so when I became captain I generally used to limit repetitions to 50 or so. I think after you do 100, you are just copying the motions. What was different today was the variety- when we hit the makiwara, we’d not only do seiken and shuto, but hiji, haito, etc., for example, 30 times each. Hitting the makiwara hundreds of times with oizuki without focus and concentration and thinking about it, just mechanically doing repetitions, doesn’t mean that much.

(YKU) What is the training like today at some of the famous Universities do you think? Is it still as hard as it once was?

(SI) In Japanese university clubs of that era the first years were regarded as slaves, the second years were regarded as regular humans, the third years were emperors and the fourth years were gods. It’s a bit like that at Takushoku. Waseda and Keio are more intellectual so while we had a hierarchy, it wasn’t as rigid as places like Takushoku. We thought of them as barbarians.

(YKU) You are a student of Master Nakayama. Can you tell us about him? When you first introduced to him? How long were you taught by him?

(SI) Well I was a student of Nakayama Sensei later at the JKA, but actually I was a student of Funakoshi (Gichin) Sensei at Waseda first.

Funakoshi Sensei’s teaching was very spiritual and philosophical. The most famous expression in Karate is “sente nashi” and this is what he always used to stress. He was already at an advanced age in those days and he was not able to move so much at the time. When he would demonstrate, his techniques resembled or contained strong elements of Aikido, using the opponent’s attack power against them to deflect the blow.

(YKU) And what was the training like with Nakayama Sensei?

(SI) When I rejoined Karate I was 53. I was personally taught kata by Nakayama Sensei at the JKA. He would focus on kata and taught me the 26 Shotokan kata. When I was young, all I had wanted to do was do kihon and fight. But Nakayama Sensei said he wanted to understand the meaning behind each move of each of the 26 kata, and this was a vitally important thing for an instructor. Nakayama Sensei had a very deep and detailed knowledge of the kata. He was the first instructor who had the ability to really be able to teach kata systematically. He had exemplary skill in breaking down the movements and meanings and explaining them. Originally, at third and fourth dan, you were expected to be able to perform all the kata, but at fifth dan you were expected to be able to teach them as well. So Nakayama Sensei explained to me that he wanted to educate me to become an instructor.

(YKU) What was your training like in those days?

(SI) I was eager to learn from other martial arts and kakutogi, so I used to visit and train at kickboxing gyms and a Kyokushin dojo, because I liked their low kicks. What I wanted to do was to try to learn what were the strong and weak parts of each. It’s very important to understand Shotokan by being able to compare it with other styles. For example I used to enjoy boxing and the uppercut is a great punch that is not a Shotokan technique. I used to try to visit other places because if you are attacked in the street, it’s very important that you be prepared for all sorts of things because you don’t know what sort of attack is going to come at you. If your opponent has some boxing experience, he’s going to throw hooks or uppercuts so you need to be experienced to be able to deal with these. Another reason is because knowing your enemy and preparing for whatever might happen is an essential part of strategy. This is a key part of Shonshi (Sun Tzu’s Art of War) that Japanese people used to read in the past to learn how to fight. There are four main pillars in the fighting strategy- 1. If you know yourself but not your enemy, you will win once and loose once. 2. But also if you know the enemy but not yourself, it is the same result, it’s 50/50. 3. If you know yourself and the enemy, you will win 100 times in a row. 4. But if you don’t know your enemy and don’t know yourself, then you will loose 100 times in a row. I think this lack of planning was one of the reasons why Japan lost the Pacific War. We couldn’t understand our enemy at all.

(YKU) Would you be kind enough to share some stories that you have of Master Nakayama?

(SI) I think people don’t know about this but Nakayama Sensei was a private instructor to senior officers at a major embassy in Tokyo. One day he invited me along to come to teach with him at the embassy. Nakayama Sensei told me that this was unofficial teaching so this was kept as a secret between him and I. But I think its OK to be revealed.

(YKU) How was Sensei Nakayama different inside the dojo to how he was outside of it?

(SI) Nakayama Sensei did not change much, he was the same in or outside the dojo; his behavior was very modes and he behaved as a gentleman. He had gravitas and at the same time, a purposeful and calm charisma, which seem to attract people and inspire confidence. It was very sad for us when he passed away.

(YKU) What were the most important things you took away from your training with him?

(SI) If I could sum Nakayama Sensei up, it would be to call him a gentleman. The spirit of Karate that Nakayama Sensei taught is to be strong enough to be gracious and patient with others. That’s the most important thing I learned.

(YKU) How would you describe Master Nakayama’s philosophy to karate?

(SI) If you are a strong man, you have the space and the depth to be gentle. You have to be strong in yourself and if the time comes, you use your power to defeat your opponent. This is basic philosophy that I learned from Nakayama Sensei.

(YKU) You had a period of time away from karate. Why was that if you don’t mind me asking?

(SI) Well I started my own business and I was busy running and building up my own company.

(YKU) And what was it that eventually made you come back to karate?

(SI) I decided to come back to Karate when I retired.

(YKU) You are a longtime friend of Sensei Yahara am I correct? How did you first get to know him?

(SI) Well, I was introduced to Mr. Yahara by a restaurant owner in Nagano where I had bought a villa who was a mutual friend. So I went to see the JKA All Japan championships and I saw him fight and his kata and it really made a strong impact on me. I remember it was always Mr. Yahara doing Unsu vs. Mr. Osaka doing Sochin…. (At this point, Ibusuki Sensei’s wife, 8X years young, who is serving green tea breaks in.... ‘Oh, he was so handsome! He was so exciting and adorable!”)

[Ibusuki Sensei continues]...and my wife wanted to meet him. So I thought, OK, I’ll call him. And we did and we invited him to our villa. The first time he visited he came with a friend I think because he was feeling a little bit shy.

(Yahara Sensei comments on this strange coincidence: I love driving and I used to love to drive to Nagano, and Nagano used to be a favorite place to go, and I used to pop into that café because it was stylish and had a nice atmosphere).

(YKU) Can you tell us a little about him and what it is about him that makes him such an intriguing character?

(SI) I think what strikes me most about Mr. Yahara is that he is very straight and very black and white and he doesn’t flatter people. He knows what he likes and what he doesn’t. His personality- it’s rare, he has a very clear consciousness of what he likes and what he doesn’t and he is very honest. I also admire his sheer talent in karate and as a man: that he is a businessman that he has been running a company more than 30 years.

(YKU) Why did you start teaching at the KWF?

(SI) Why I started teaching at the KWF is because of several reasons. One was Mr. Yahara’s Kenkyo, a genuine sense of modesty and humbleness and the other were his reasons. He said he wanted me to teach KWF students about the traditional Karate that I had learned at Waseda, and that form of Budo spirit mentality to inspire the younger generations. When I used to teach at the JKA in Shinagawa, the sensei there was very strict on what he wanted to teach but he didn’t really know anything! Mr. Yahara’s attitude was to please teach the way I wanted and also to have a bit of fun. I love to share a joke and have a conversation with our student. It was Mr. Yahara’s comments and attitudes that persuaded me.

(YKU) What do you think about the KWF’s Karate or Yahara Sensei’s Karate?

(SI) Jissenteki – real- that’s the word that sums up Mr. Yahara’s Karate. His Karate is based on real fighting skills, on real fights, on fighting experience. In the JKA, headbutting etc is illegal, but in a real fight, headbutting is one of the effective techniques. I think these days JKA kihon renshu is a little different- the KWF kihon training is quite different from JKA time and I learned from this. I think first of all you have Mr. Isaka’s training which trains the body. Then you have Mr. Yahara’s ability to compress and twist and this makes a lot of power. Mr. Yahara is a person who really fights.

(YKU) Some people might argue that the KWF uses too much twist and compression.

(SI) Mr. Yahara’s skill level and experience level is different from the people who say such things. If you are in a real fight, you want to knock your opponent down with a single punch. The people who argue about this don’t understand. If you want to do that, you realize that Mr. Yahara’s technique and theory is not only reasonable, but necessary. When you see Yahara Sensei’s Karate you can see how powerful and impressive it is. He understands real fighting.

(YKU) Many believe kata is closely linked with spiritual development. What are your feelings on this?

(SI) Kata is essential for Karate to be Karate. Without kata, Karate would be street fighting, or just become brawling...but Kata has grace and meaning. I think Shotokan is distinguished by its Kata- compared to Karate like something like Kyokushin. Kata is the essence of Karate. When the Shimazu invaded Okinawa and banned the use of weapons they also forbade the Okinawans to train. So while they had to train in secret, the Kata were also disguised as Okinawan folk dancing. So you could watch Okinawan folk dancing but you can see the techniques of Karate movement in them. The Shimizu clan could ban weapons and training, but they didn’t see the dancing for what it was and didn’t ban it. Within the dancing were all the kata movement. So I was amazed when I was watching a TV program on Ryuku dancing a little while back and I saw a form of Hangetsu in the dancing. In Kata you have the wisdom and essence of the versions of techniques developed by Okinawans and you have the Okinawan culture. In the dances you can see the origins of Karate and the culture of the Ryuku people. So yes, I strongly believe kata is spiritual and cultural. If there is no kata, why don’t you just wear a dogi and toughen yourself up with kickboxing? Kata makes Karate Karate. Why- because it contains the tradition and culture of the Okinawan people against the Shimizu-ha. Kata is where all the fighting techniques are preserved.

Also, Kata is a kind of Zen. By practicing Kata you learn technique, balance, breathing, focus, concentration. As it’s said, Kata is DoZen, or moving Zen. Instead of motionless Zen, it’s Zen in motion. This is very, very important. Karateka should have something of the aesthetic monk in them, a sense of calm and spirituality, and they should hold that spirit when they practice. These points are also important. It’s character- what’s good and what is not good. The spiritual aspect is important.

(YKU) Kata application in recent years, particularly throughout the West, has increased in popularity and significance. Do you think application of the kata should be a central part of the karate training?

(SI) It is a fact is that different Sensei have different explanations of the applications and meanings of different Kata. However, I believe that the teaching of application is very important. There are many ways to understand and digest Kata and there are many ways and methods to teach. I think this breadth is a good thing. There is nobody who can say “this is ultimate bunkai of this Kata’’. There are many approaches and understanding, and this is the wonderful thing about Kata- there is no one ultimate answer. Kata applications can be taken just for fighting skills training, and Kata can be used to emphasize spiritual training, but the point is that the Kata themselves contain the essence of Karate in them and it is up to the teachers and the students to discover and learn and distill that essence to develop themselves.

In a sense I believe that Kata applications should be a bit like cooking from raw materials. Now Japanese food is different from British food, but Japanese food cooked in the UK is often subtly different from Japanese food cooked in, say Tokyo. Japan has its own way of taking foreign cuisine and subtly adapting it to our tastes. So in Japan you’d never serve avocado and sushi, and you won’t find Japanese mild and sweet curry in India. Now if you are narrow minded you can say this is all wrong and there is only one way of doing one thing. But the Kata stand for themselves. Basically how you teach applications is you can be free to think what you want.

(YKU) What is your favourite kata and why?

(SI) Kyuzo Mifune (considered by many to be the greatest Judo master of all time) said: “I have no favorite technique...so my favorite technique is everything.” But Mifune was a great, a great master. My philosophy is that we should all make all the Kata our favorite.

(YKU) But really you must have a favorite?

(SI) When I was a young man- I really loved Jion- I really like the rhythm and the meriharii (the contrasts). However, Yahara Sensei says Jitte suits me...and I also personally like Nijoshiho-sho. And Kawasaki san (Norio Kawasaki, KWF International Shihan) is really excellent at Gojusho-dai.

(YKU) How is kata regarded today by younger karate do you think?

(SI) These days young people lack courtesy.... we are in an age where there is a collapse in manners in young people. Young people practicing Karate should train part of themselves to be spiritual and aesthetic in their attitudes.

(YKU) You have been using the same tree at a local park as a makiwara for decades am I correct? Is this something you still very much enjoy and have you established a relationship with this tree would you say?

(SI) I have been hitting trees in Komazawa Park (the local park) for 25 years. Where I live here, on the balcony, it’s difficult to make a makiwara at home- I can’t make a hole in the concrete to bury the base, and if I did have one, the sound would echo of the neighboring buildings and cause complaints. So I decided to try out the trees in Komazawa Park. There are lots of Hinoki (Japanese Cypress) trees there so the first time I tested out one with a trunk about this thick (makes a gesture indicating about 20-25 cm).

The Hinoki has a very soft bark and the tree is very yarawakai (bendy, with give) so I started using that. By the way, don’t do this if you are a beginner. After a few years I worried that I was injuring the tree, so I switched trees. So now I switch trees every few years. I don’t have to worry because it’s a park and there are plenty of trees!

One of my other training in the park is to train my shuto and one day I looked to see if I could cut stalks cleanly. So one day my wife got a bunch of hand cut hydrangeas.

(Author note- one of Ibusuki Senseis favorite tricks used to be chopping off the tops of beer bottles, a trick that was popularized by Mas Oyama. Ibusuki Sensei used to be able to chop two bottles, but strangely enough, only with his right hand).

(YKU) How has JKA Karate changed over the decades would you say?

(SI) I don’t think the JKA has really changed a lot in some ways from the old days. However, there are some rules in JKA shiai that don’t make sense. In a real fight, the person who hits the hardest wins. I don’t think it’s correct to stick to sun-do-me rues. It means in those kinds of Shai you can’t really throw powerful techniques.

This is what I like about the KWF shiai because you aim to score ippon and you have to hit the person hard to score ippon. And I think without that sort of pressure, a shiai just becomes a game. Remember, before the JKA, there weren’t really any fixed rules and we really used to hurt each other. There were too many injuries, and that’s why the JKA introduced standard rules to prevent injuries.

(YKU) The WKF is having a major affect on how karate is being practiced throughout Europe with Karate increasingly becoming more sportified. Has the WKF had any impact on the way karate is being practiced in Japan would you say?

(SI) Well if you were harsh, you could say that Kendo is not sword fighting, it’s just become a game with sticks. You tap someone on the shoulder and you get a point. This is pathetic. When you slice with a sword, you must slice the through the bone. Or with Judo, it’s often like a game of wrestling to get points.

It was inevitable that Karate be sportified. And I think that people who play sports karate just fight to make themselves look good and score points. There is no technique. The points system damages the meaning of Karate. That sort of Karate is a joke.

(YKU) Who do you think is practicing karate closest to its original source?

(SI) Well the source is Jissen Karate and of course this is Nishiyama Sensei and his generation, and Kanazawa Sensei, and Mr. Yahara. Of course, Karate evolves and changes generation by generation. But if you do jissen Karate in shiai, then you are practicing original Karate, like Mr. Kawasaki does in his shiai.

(YKU) What is your overall philosophy for karate?

(SI) Mr. Ifrah (Serge Ifra, KWF Advisor and friend) and I were having a long talk about philosophy and Karate and he said his philosophy was “Be a gentleman first before you are a Karateka.”

I really agree with that.

And even when you are dripping with sweat and suffering like hell, enjoy yourself! You must have a pure aesthetic, but you must also enjoy yourself. If you don’t have some fun involved with Karate, there is no point!

(YKU) Can we say a big thank you for this opportunity to interview you. It is so appreciated, and may we wish you every success for the future.

KWF KARATE is

KWF Karate is composed of a fusion of the skills and theories of both Chief Instructor Yahara and Assistant Chief Instructor Isaka. KWF Karate is a form of Karate that represents a compilation of highly sophisticated techniques into an art form.

Yahara Karate as Bujutsu has been through many a scene of bloodshed. Yahara Karate is about using the muscles and joints in movements that explosively release the hidden power of the whole body. Such techniques can be appreciated both for their beauty and sharpness.

The characteristic features of KWF Karate are in the way that the whole body must be fully utilized to produce dynamic and extremely strong techniques that are explosively powerful. We do not deal in feints, small techniques and tactical ploys.

These training techniques were developed through research and experience the key points are being aware of and how to control one's center of gravity and hip and back movement.

We make use of Assistant Chief Instructor Isaka's training methods to enable us to build our bodies in order to develop the fundamental abilities to achieve such techniques and enable us to move our center of gravity correctly and utilize our whole bodies. The idea is to develop the ability to control your movements to the nearest millimeter. Such techniques are eye-opening for Karate-ka who have been training for many years.

From what I know about YS Kata Bunkai, YS tends to dispel complex explanations about lots of Kata moves and brings things back to their original simplicity. Those of you who are aite, be prepared to get knocked flat or hit by YS masonry-like fists and iron bar arms and legs. Ouch! (Part of the fun, of course...)

ENTREVISTA A SHIHAN MIKIO YAHARA ( RED MARCIAL ARGENTINA)

Following on from the highly successful previous outing to North Africa, it's time again for the latest KWF North Africa Seminar hosted by Shihan Sid Tadrist and headed by YS.

The Samurai in Shirokanedai

Feature By Paul Kallender-Umezu

The Samurai in Shirokanedai

There’s something special in the Barbizon 25 building in Shirokanedai, and it’s not just Mario Frittoli’s modern Italian restaurant, Luxor, where the melodic chink of glass against glass, crockery against cutlery, and the murmur of conviviality are the sounds of a typical Saturday afternoon. Instead, go down to the basement and put your ear to the door for the thwack of a leg swiping through the air, or the smack of flesh against wood and against flesh, and sudden, heart-stopping shouts—the sounds of the pursuit of the killing blow.

Inside the spotless dojo there stalks a figure clutching a long shinai (training stick). When he kicks, he tears up space. His punches are thunderclaps. He barks, and a dozen black-belted men and women fly at each other. It’s impossible not to be affected by his presence. He walks into a room and heads turn. He’s a panther that will rip you to shreds. The knuckles on his hams are covered in layer upon layer of scar tissue. Arms with iron rods for bones and muscles of knotted wood jut from the sleeves of his blood-stained uniform. The jaw is that of the Terminator. And the eyes? The eyes are knives.

There is also artistry here. The man talks about unsu, or “cloud hand,” perhaps the most beautiful and challenging of traditional karate kata, the patterns of movements used to show mastery of technique. In unsu, the performer instantly switches from an artist of graceful, flowing movements to a human pile driver, and the kata is defined by a leap and feline twist that ends in a sprinter’s crouch. In hundreds of demonstrations, this man was unsu, and unsu was his. With it, in 1984, he became world champion, and of it, he is the undisputed master.

This man is Mikio Yahara. As a trainee instructor, he was so poor he’d drink bottles of water flavored with salt, soy and sugar to fill his stomach. Born in Ehime Prefecture in 1947, the fourth brother of a family of local samurai, he rose through the old Japan Karate Association (JKA) to become arguably the most gifted fighter of his era. This was the man who taught Yukio Mishima karate, which literally means “the ways of the empty hand.” Fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto is both his pupil and the chairman of his karate organization. And now, at 59, he is his own master and commander, but still the enfant terrible of his generation.

Legends surround Yahara. In fact, he’s still making headlines. This April, Gekkan Karatedo, Japan’s most respected traditional karate magazine, in an article entitled “The Return of the Legend!,” printed 22 pages of stories and photographs of him as blood-splattered warrior, as Adonis, and as a would-be karate assassin, dispatching people with kicks to the head.

Talking with Metropolis, he’s introspectively philosophical, describing the meaning of budo and karate, and his concept of death: “You never know, someone may come to this dojo to try to kill me. So be it. When I take that fight, I will be prepared to die. Yahara means ‘no escape.’ I will throw one killing attack. That is definite. That is the only way.”

Yahara is a born fighter; this is a little of his story.

Yahara’s childhood, he recalls, was hyperactive, chasing wild dogs and always ready for a fight. His uncle was a local kendo master, his brother a karate expert, and his mother’s family descended from pirates. His youth was spent, he says, hitting the stone pillars of the local shrine, whose garden was his first dojo.

Diagnosed with a heart condition at 13, he was told to stop, but, instead, secretly joined the local judo club to vent his passions. From the beginning he was different. As a high-school boy he was already battling university students in street fights, a sign of what was bloodily to become. “I could have joined a local bancho (gang),” he says, “but I was always a lone wolf.”

At 18, he was given a map to the JKA Honbu Dojo (headquarters) and packed his bags for Tokyo. In those days the JKA, under Masatoshi Nakayama, “was the Mecca of world karate, its masters stars in their own right,” he says. He pounded his way into the JKA’s crème de la crème, the Instructors Course, just out of Kokushikan University, and it was then that the roller coaster really began.

Eating lamb “Genghis Khan” at a trendy grill in Meguro, he recalls some of his more memorable scrapes: “One day we had a rough session, the ambulances started lining up. Five people were hospitalized, and I was responsible for three.” Then there was the time when he turned up to a competition with a stab wound in the stomach and fought anyway. Or when he performed unintentional dental surgery on a knocked-out opponent: “My fist was stuck in his mouth and there was blood everywhere. I put my foot on his chest to extract my hand and when I went to the bathroom to clean up, I found one of his teeth still embedded in my knuckle.”

By the time Yahara was in his mid-20s, he was already turning heads. A taste of the early Yahara can be caught in The World’s Strongest Karate, an old black and white video treasured by aficionados in which he’s seen leaping through the air, like something from The Matrix. Yahara says he has great respect for the other fighters of his era, but video archives on the website of his organization, the Karatenomichi World Federation (KWF), show him striking opponents at will, knocking them out, and, perhaps most memorably, banging one down with an astonishing kick to the head while Yahara was on the floor. A look at videos of the 1970s and ’80s shows him developing what was called “Yahara Karate,” an extraordinary ability to turn almost any situation into an opportunity to clock his opponents.

Maybe it was the pirate’s blood in him that made him too hot to handle in his younger days, he says. Because, while Yahara to this day exudes power, it’s not the power to repel; it’s the power to attract. His dojo is friendly and full of a mix of karate athletes, beginners, and plenty of non-Japanese, expats and English teachers, mothers and kids.

Up close, Yahara is charming, witty and self-deprecating. When he finishes teaching, he mucks in with everyone else to clean the dojo. And despite his huge haul of medals, Yahara’s competitive career doesn’t concern him at all. “Competition is a game for taking points,” he says. “My goal has always been different. My karate practice is always to prepare for a real fight.”
Courtesy of KWF

So what about those real fights? His personal security company, International Security Service, keeps in its records a television segment from NHK’s Ohayo Nihon morning program about 15 years ago, in which Yahara knocks the living daylights out of Norio Kawasaki, his KWF successor, on camera in front of an audience of millions.

Yahara the enforcer is unabashed about stopping boryokudan (yakuza gangs) extorting his clients. “They are like leeches. If you start showing weakness, they will not let you go,” he says. Facing death threats, he used to move house regularly. But his work got really personal just over a decade ago, when he single-handedly beat up 34 local chimpira (low-rank yakuza) in a parking lot.

One afternoon in Shizuoka, stopping by a convenience store with clients he was providing unofficial security for, he found a gang of chimpira waiting in the parking lot. He asked his clients to lock themselves in the car. He sensed trouble. Lots ensued.

“I heard my clients shouting, and saw them on my car bonnet. I knew if I backed down, I was finished,” he says, giving a blow-by-blow account, beginning with making sure he didn’t kill the first guy in line by deliberately hitting him with a palm strike. “I bounced the next one off the bonnet, and he squealed like a squashed frog. That was a sign for all of them to attack all at once. But it was very hard because there were still 30 left and I was 47. If they grabbed me, it would be the end.” There was a lucky escape when they pulled out clubs, he admits, one flashing past his eyes. “When I kicked him in the stomach, he doubled up like a prawn,” Yahara recalls.
With the casualty rate mounting, a character in a red leather jacket attempted to ram him with a car. “I could see his crazed, bloodshot eyes through the windshield,” he says. But he missed, and they fled.

“I tried to chase them, but my I realized I’d also been bare footed and my feet were cut to ribbons. I sank to my knees.”

End of story? Not quite.

Enter the local don, with his greased-back hair and olive green double-breasted suit and toting a gun, squaring up to him on the quayside for Act II the following day.

“He said, ‘It seems that my men are real pussies,’” recalls Yahara. “He lit a cigarette. ‘I came to talk because I don’t want this ending up taking your balls. Some of my men are in the hospital. I want you to pay their fees.’”

No chance.

“My answer was, ‘I would rather fight to the death than pay you,’” Yahara continues. “He put his hand inside his jacket and I knew it was a gun, but at that moment the police came, and he relaxed. ‘I’ll see you around, ni-san,’ he said.”

Yahara’s conclusion: “I set out… to clean the rubbish out of the system, and fortunately, so far I’m not dead.”

Real fights are always close to Yahara’s thoughts, and so is death, not least the death of traditional karate. Sitting with the KWF, of which he is chief instructor, and watching him in action, it seems like he exists in another dimension to today’s karate stars.

Yahara has turned his body into a beautiful sword. When he moves, he is a machine; when he attacks, his techniques start and finish so fast your can hardly see them. Watching him whip a back-fist, smashing blocks of hardwood from just 30 centimeters away, his speed and power is simply shocking.

When asked just what karate is, the hoarse whisper that is his conversational tone stops. He dives within himself. The eyes nail you. And then comes the answer:

“The definition of karate is to be prepared to risk your life in a fight to the death. Because of this, every single action and motion must be ikkyoshu, ittousoku: a single strike of the hand, a single strike of the leg. With each single motion, you risk your life.”

Yahara’s karate—the linear, efficient shotokan style he demonstrates—is in stark contrast to the styles of the contemporary fighting competitions. Where does his power come from? “From kihon,” he says, referring to the fundamental movements that harness the power of the entire body. These are the roots of original karate, taught half a century ago, but which are now, he says, being forgotten.

“Karate’s concept is how to fight without having a weapon. So what do you do to fight against those with weapons with only your flesh and blood? You have to transform that flesh and blood into iron, in both your body and your technique,” he says. “The usage of your body in kihon motion is using the joints and muscles to create compression and expansion. You have to deliver your inside potential energy into the level of energy to break your opponent. The theory behind the movement is something you have to study and practice to make your body move naturally, following that theory. That’s KWF karate.”

Yahara’s point of view, he says, represents the true legacy of karate. In a world dominated by TV extravaganzas and commercialism, Yahara’s philosophy feels like a breath of fresh air, his passion a tonic for those who seek the beauty of budo in karate. His stance is open to debate within the karate world itself, owing to philosophical splits that opened in the JKA more than a quarter of a century ago. But whether or not you agree with him, nobody who has fought Yahara would dare doubt his power, skill or samurai heart.

KWF International Masters Camp Algeria (Tebessa)

KWF International Masters Camp Algeria (Tebessa)
24th |26th October 2008

Chiro Kairo Ni
Back to the Beginning
Report by International Shihan Sid Tadrist
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Why this title? If we all desire the same thing in karate we will understand Yahara Sensei's philosophy.

Chiro Kairo Ni which ran October 24-25-26 was the 3rd Camp held by the KWF in North Africa. Due tothe high demand in North Africa to experience KWF Karate, we organised this camp to be open so everyone could share. It also represented an important opportunity to get all the North African countries together to share their approach to the Traditional Karate we foster. Finally we agreed for this time that the camp would take place in Tebessa in the East of Algeria near the boarder of Tunisia and Libya. And also all the participants from the neighbouring countries Morocco, Egypt and the Middle East would be welcome to join. The Governor of Tebessa, seeing this as opportunity of cultural exchange between countries pursuing the same goals, supported this event and on behalf of everyone in the KWF we would like to offer our huge thanks for his generous hospitality

Sensei Yahara (hereinafter YS) and Otsuka Sensei, a 4th Dan KWF trainee instructor arrived at Algiers after a long flight from Tokyo and we felt obliged to give them a day's rest for a little sightseeing. Yahara Sensei had already been with me to Algeria in 2004 so he knew what to expect already.

The next day we flew to Tebessa to the venue and after introducing YS and OS we conducted the opening ceremony and soon everyone got down to training.

Practice 1:
We started with the basics (1) Zenkutsu-dachi left leg forward/ Tate-shouto-uke with the left arm pushing away the hips hanmi (profile) to the maximum with the Hikite pulled also to the maximum insuring that the front knee stayd solid and stable pointed toward the front toes. In Hikite, the back leg should be slightly bent to keep the hips compressed the foot pointed at a 45 degree or nearer if possible to the direction of attack (tsumaseki mae) with the heel anchored to the ground and with the knee should pointing toward the direction of the target as you could see from the picture. (2) The next movement is gyaku-zuki; bring the hips back to shomen tate-shouto-uke pulled back to hikkite and locked with the hips to stabilise the body on impact with the target.

Pic (2) Yahara Sensei Explaining Hanmi & Shomen

The next practice was a bit more dynamic: Combining (1) & (2) by keeping the upper body compressed in hanmi and generating explosive power through expansion of the back leg toward the target without going upward during the attack (see picture). Everything is biomechanically focused to keep power in one path; then next block with a full speed and power and counter attack in the same way again

Practice 2:
Taking things one step further, we used the same practice one while the gyaku-zuki is extended sharply using the lower abdominal muscles (tanden or hara) for kime also to control the distance and the impact with the target, and start again breathing when pulling hanmi keeping the center of gravity, balance, focus...and like a shot gun let everything out when we punch, and reload with all the points in mind. After a while we start to feel the strength of the workout; nonetheless it is a fascinating feeling. Sensei explained the corrections over and over with Otsuka sensei and showed more interesting points.

Pic (3) YS explaining the extention of the rear leg from hanmi to shomen with the punch in one spontaneous move.

The reason for this practice is to develop all the hip muscles, joints, flexibility of the hip rotation kime and, most importantly, the coordination between the upper body and lower body in conjunction. The next practice consisted of combinations of hanmi shomen moving forward with oi-zuki and gyaku-zuki keeping all the basics in mind,
YS explained the five locking points after the finishing punch. Either with oi-zuki or gyaku-zuki, hikite is always pulled to the maximum with the elbow tight on the side keeping the shoulder down; keep the tsuki toward the center and also it is vital to keep the shoulder also down while keeping the front knee slightly toward the inside parallel with the toes (picture 3) and the back leg completely extended pushing the hip against the opposite direction. The point: in gyaku-hanmi the hip is completely locked. All the five points should be locked in the same time on the finish blow of tsuki.

Practice 3
Koshi no kaiten! From zenkutsu-dachi left leg forward and gyaku-zuki on the spot, spin 360 degrees clockwise with urakan-uchi with out moving from the spot; just pivot on the ball of the feet. Easy! Maybe not. This practice needs a complete twist of the knee, ankles, join, hips back; and all the muscles need to be involved. Everything to the LIMIT. Balance is crucial and keeping the center of gravity is a challenge! The point of this practice is to drive everything with the hip rotation in one motion and to stop at the moment of impact with urakan uchi while keeping the body low and the supporting legs glued to the ground.

Next we came back with the same drive and speed anti clockwise to the same spot with the hip movement like a hammer explosively unwinding on the end of a human-sized clock spring. With practice and practice gradually gyaku-zuki and then urakan uchi with a greater power and stability
To generate power and to use kaiten urakan-uchi in YS fashion, the correct use of the hip is paramount.

Practice 4.
From fudo-dachi, (natural stance) block with soto-uke; spin 360 degree clockwise with urakan-uchi using the same principles from the previous practice koshi kaiten; but this time make sure the movement is more dynamic! As soon as you land, spin back on the same spot anti-clockwise 180 degrees with urakan-uchi. Then to make it even more challenging, from the same spot we then practiced spinning backwards clockwise with urakan-uchi with a huge spin. The balance and speed and harmony that YS executes these techniques totally belies his age, which is now over 60. YS typifies Budo Karate with all its beauty and spirit.

Practice 5.
This practice is about compression and expansion of the legs, pulling and pushing the hips and how to generate maximum power and also how to successfully execute body evasion (tai-sabaki).
From kamae, shift your whole body backward with yori-ashi to a smaller and compressed naihanchi-dachi with the knees pointed forward and the hip maximum hanmi, block with age-uke to start with then soto-uke and finaly gedan-barai, hikite while the block is done is always to the limit next spring forward with gyaku-zuki pushing the hips and expansion of the back leg to zenkutsu-dachi, all in one motion everything should stop simultaneously with gyaku-zuki. Once the attack finishes return to kamae .
After that we did more variations of this practice from yori-ashi to the next tai-sabaki and hiki-ashi stepping backward pulling and rotating the hips in one snap movement and blocking and attacking with oi-zuki. This dynamic practice is very useful for kumite.

Kicks are done in the same way. Mae-geri is performed keeping the body low and kick using the hips to generate power and speed, once the kick is out the back leg extends toward the target.

Also for mawashi-geri: with the kicking leg the use of the knee correctly with the hips rotation, toward the target the expansion of the supporting leg should be done in the same time while the ball of the foot reaches the target.

Practice 6.
With partners we used the same basics from practices 3 and 4. Next we did gohon kumite; we used practice 2 oi-zuki adding mae-geri and jiyu-ippon-kumite; we used the practice 5 with attacks of oi-zuki, mae-geri yoko-geri, and mawashi-geri keeping in mind all the basics. By the end of this practice we could see a huge difference in everyone's moves!

The last practice consisted of kata using all the fundamental basics with correct timing of each movement, correct position, etccSensei explained kata bunkai and more about the simplicity and understanding of the kata basics. By this time we were coming to the end of our camp and Sensei was kind enough to talked more about the history of Shotokan and how it has evolved. Yahara Sensei insists of keeping the traditional shotokan kata and the practice of the basics, as they are very important.

Yahara Sensei's view on Kata is that Kata should be kept strong and beautiful and that we should remember the original purpose behind them. When we complicate the kata, they become weak and meaningless and even loose their soul.

Kata is executed with power; precision and the whole body participate to every action executed.

Every attack should feel like it is your killing blow; every block as if that will be the only block to save your life. If kata is performed in this fashion, it will be beautiful kata in motion, but it will came with a price as anything else in life.

What we learned from this camp is that the basics are the source of Karate and it is from the basics that we extract the essence and beauty of Karate. This is Yahara Sensei's philosophy and this is Budo.

We finished the camp with the grading of 180 people and we will upload the candidates who passed shortly.

As a final note, I would like to make the following comments.

The camp was a great success at all levels. First of all, I would like to thank everyone for the high number of participants and the high level of commitment shown.
I must also say the for the majority it was the first time to experience Yahara Sensei's Karate first hand. People were surprised by Yahara Sensei's power and speed, his knowledge and how charming and charismatic he is. I would also like to say a personal thank you and thank you from all of us for the able support provided by Ohtsuka Sensei, who also helped make this a highly successful Camp.

Thank you very much Sensei and Ohtsuka Sensei.
